The new galerie102, located at 102 W. Matilija St., in Ojai opens on Saturday, November 16th with its inaugural exhibition, “We are One, We are Many”, featuring Devin Oatway paintings and Jon Rajkovich sculpture. Artist’s reception will be held on the same day from 5 – 8 p.m.

Jolene Lloyd“Ojai has always been an artist’s town, and it’s becoming even more so with this gallery,” says Gallery Director Jolene Lloyd. “My vision for the gallery is to take a small piece of the vibrant Chelsea, New York gallery scene and plop it down in bucolic Ojai. We’re also conveniently located between two Ojai landmarks: Bart’s books and Rainbow Bridge – so between great books and natural food – there will now be thought-provoking art.”

Lloyd’s program focuses on contemporary painting, mixed media, sculpture, photography and video installation. The gallery represents local and international artists.

The program also features outsider art. “Really it would be more apt to say that we have a focus on outsider/insider art,” says Lloyd. “By definition, outsider art is created by an artist who has not had formal art training. Jean Michel-Basquiat is a great example. But to me it also means artists who think outside of the box and take huge risks – those who don’t play it safe with their work. And for that matter, all of the artists on the galerie102 roster – whether they’ve gone to art school or not – have that unique quality.”

Local painter, Devin Oatway began painting furtively during the 1990′s after being introduced to the Abstract Expressionists of the 1980′s. He majored in English Literature at Stanford University and in 2003, after being diagnosed Schizoaffective, began painting full time.

Oatway’s works are collected all over the United States, and he continues to work diligently on art that bridges the gap between soul and mind, unconscious and conscious, dream and waking life.

Sculptor, Jon Rajkovich, originally from Detroit, Michigan, received his MFA from Winthrop University and attended Skoowhegan. His sculptures incorporate wood, wire, paint and found objects into free-flowing forms that take on a whimsical life of their own. His work has been exhibited across the country and written about in Art in America, the Chicago Sun Times and the Los Angeles Times. He is featured in the best-selling California art book “Milk and Honey.”

“We are one, We are Many” will be at galerie102 until December 29th, 2013. Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. or by appointment at (805) 640-0151.
